Supreme Court orders RO water for Ujjain Shivlinga
Bhopal: The Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered to offer only RO purified water to Shivling of the famed Mahakaleswar temple in Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh for its preservation.
The court’s order comes in the wake of a petition filed a devotee seeking measures to protect Shivling of Mahakaleswar, one of the 12 Jyotirlings in the country. The apex court has earlier constituted an expert committee comprising also officials of Geological Survey of India and Archaeological Survey of India to examine the Shivling of Mahakaleswar temple of Ujjain and recommend measures for its preservation. Earlier, the petitioners Sarika Guru of Ujjain moved the apex court expressing concern over erosion of the Shivling due to offering of water.
The ASI in its report had earlier found that the water offered to the Shivling is polluted.
The SC has earlier ordered measures such as limiting amount of water to offer to the Shivling to 500 milliliters, covering of the Shivling with dry cotton cloth during some particular rituals when milk and “panchamrut” (a liquid sweet disc made of milk) are offered to the Shivling.
