Ex-Army Chief joins breakaway Akali Dal

The former Army Chief resigned from all party posts, citing wrong deeds and policies of the Badal family.

Chandigarh: Former Army Chief Gen. J.J. Singh (Retd) formally joined SAD (Taksali), a part of expe-lled leaders of the Akali Dal, on Wednesday in the presence of party president and Lok Sabha MP from Khadoor Sahib constituency in Punjab Ranjit Singh Brahmpura in Amritsar.

On Tuesday, another senior leader and former deputy speaker of the Punjab Legislative Assembly Bir Devinder Singh had joined SAD (Taksali) in the presence of Mr Brahmpura.

Gen. Singh, who also served as governor of Arunachal Pradesh, had joined the SAD(Badal) before the 2017 Assembly elections and contested unsuccessfully against chief minister Capt. Amarinder Singh from the Patiala Assembly constituency.

The former Army Chief resigned from all party posts, citing wrong deeds and policies of the Badal family. Gen. Singh was the first Sikh officer to become the Army Chief. He fought the 1965 and 1971 wars.
