Man kills self after kin don't back poll dreams
Kendrapara (Odisha): A trolley-rickshaw puller committed suicide after his family refused “cooperation” when he expressed his desire to contest upcoming panchayat polls in the state, police said Saturday.
Nabaghana Mallick of Gulnagar village near Kendrapara town, around 85 km from here, wanted to contest for the post of a ward member in the panchayat elections scheduled to be held in February. He told his family and relatives and sought their “cooperation.” Family members, however, did not agree, sending him into a state of depression since then.
On Friday afternoon, Nabaghan went missing from his house. Following a search, family members found his body hanging from a tree near their house. He was rushed to the district headquarters hospital in Kendrapara where the doctors declared him brought dead, police said. The family members claimed that they didn’t agree to Nabaghan’s proposal to contest polls due to their “poor economic condition”. The police has sent the body for post-mortem.
“A case has been registered probe under what circumstances Nabaghan took the extreme step,” said an officer from the local police station. Sources said that Nabaghana wanted to contest the polls as an independent candidate. The family members did not allow him to contest polls fearing it would incur the wrath of the local politicians who belong to some major political parties.
