3 workers hurt in flyover collapse on UP highway

Iron beams supporting the flyover sank into the ground leading to the collapse.

Lucknow: Three labourers were injured when a portion of an under-construction flyover collapsed in Basti district on Saturday morning.

The incident took place on National Highway at Phutaiyya crossing. The three labourers injured in the accident have been identified as Dharmendra Singh, Pradeep and Suresh Rai, have been admitted to the Basti district hospital.

According to eye-witnesses, the iron beams supporting the flyover suddenly sank into the ground leading to the collapse. It has been continuously raining in the area for the last two weeks.

District magistrate Raj Shekhar said that no other person was present at the time of the collapse and no one is reported missing either.

UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath has asked the district administration to immediately clear the wreckage so that traffic is not affected on National Highway 28 which links Barauni in Bihar with Lucknow via Gorakhpur.

According to latest reports, traffic has been restored on the route with barricading. The district magistrate further said that the project director of National Highway Authority of India and the ministry of road transport have been informed of the incident and take necessary action.

This portion of the flyover was being constructed by contractors directly employed by the ministry of road transport. Sixty per cent of the construction work was complete.

It may be recalled that last week, a portion of the service road on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway had caved in after heavy rains and an SUV having four passengers fell straight into it.

Earlier, on May 15, a portion of the under construction flyover in Varanasi had collapsed killing 18 persons. Eight persons, including seven engineers, were recently arrested for negligence in the matter.
