New Delhi: In what is being seen as an assurance to Iran, India on Thursday said it is moving with “speed and skill” on the Chabahar port project and said it was “committed to the development” of the port. The ministry of external affairs (MEA) said Chabahar was an “important project” for India. New Delhi has been developing the Chabahar port in Iran which has provided it with connectivity to Afghanistan through the seas bypassing Pakistan.

The comments were made in response to questions from the media on a controversy in the past 48 hours when Iran on Wednesday issued a clarification to reports in a section of the media on certain remarks alleged to have been made by Iran’s Deputy Chief of Mission (DCM) in New Delhi Massoud Rezvanian Rahaghi.

The Iranian clarification was very conciliatory in approach compared to Mr. Rahaghi’s alleged combative remarks. Tehran had apparently claimed that some of Mr Rahaghi’s reported comments had been “misquoted”.
