Lalit Modi bids adieu to cricket, forever

The letter, posted from Thailand, is addressed to board CEO Rahul Johri.

Jaipur: Ending months of speculation, former Indian Premier League chief Lalit Modi has resigned as president of the Nagaur District Cricket Association in Rajasthan.

The controversial cricket administrator, who was banned for life by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), shared a three-page letter of his resignation on his Twitter page declaring that he was stepping away from cricket administration. The letter, posted from Thailand, is addressed to board CEO Rahul Johri.

Mr Modi, who is accused of money laundering and financial irregularities, also pleaded for lifting of a ban imposed on the Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA).

“With my exit from all forms of cricket, at all levels, forever, I think RCA deserves to reclaim their share and presence on the Indian cricket map. I hope the BCCI under your stewardship lives up to that promise,” he wrote.

“I would, therefore, request you to release the funds due to RCA as soon as possible. I believe it was blocked precisely because of my presence,” Mr Modi wrote.

“I feel that the time is now ripe to pass on the baton to the next generation. Thus, today I want to bid goodbye to cricket administration for now,” he said.

There were rumours that the former RCA chief wanted to pass the baton to his son, Ruchir, who was elected president of Alwar district cricket association last year.
