Will be good if Pranab Mukherjee becomes President again: Nitish Kumar

Political heavyweights have started flexing their muscles to place their 'choice' in the seat of power.

New Delhi: Chiming in the speculations and discussion over the next President of India, Bihar Chief Minister on Monday hinted support to incumbent Pranab Mukherjee if he gets second term as the President.

"Will be good if he (Pranab Mukherjee) becomes the President again, but it is for the ruling party to take initiative," Kumar said.

As President Pranab Mukherjee's term is set to end this July, political heavyweights have started flexing their muscles to place their 'choice' in the seat of power as head of the state.

The Opposition's efforts to pitch for a joint candidate for the presidential elections are set to gain ground in the next days with Congress president Sonia Gandhi expecting to meet Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam's (DMK) working president M.K. Stalin.

On the other hand, the Shiv Sena, an ally of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Maharashtra as well as at the Centre, had proposed Bhagwat's name as the National Democratic Alliance's candidate for the country's top constitutional post earlier too.

The Shiv Sena had said that the RSS headquarters has become the "second seat of power" in the country and it does not deem anybody fit for the president's post except Sangh chief Bhagwat.

Thackeray, had earlier in April said that he had suggested Bhagwat's name for the post of President of India.
