Congress chief Rahul Gandhi to meet Alwar gangrape survivor today
Mumbai: Congress president Rahul Gandhi will fly to Rajasthan on Wednesday to meet the 19-year-old Dalit woman, who was allegedly gangraped in Alwar on April 26.
He will meet her before flying to Punjab for campaigning ahead of the last phase of 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
The Rajasthan police allegedly delayed the filing of a First Information Report (FIR) in the case. The FIR was filed only after a video of the sexual assault was circulated on social media. Five men had raped the woman after assaulting her husband and allegedly filmed the rape.
According to NDTV, Rahul’s visit to Alwar is seen as damage control and an attempt to send a message to Dalits that his party will fight for them.
The state government has removed Alwar police chief Rajiv Pachar and suspended another officer, Sardar Singh, who was in charge of the police station where the survivor had approached. Four more policemen have been taken off duty.
