New Delhi: The Election Commission of India on Tuesday issued a notice to Congress leader Mr Sanjay Nirupam with regard to his speech in Varanasi where he called Prime Minister Narendra Modi the modern-day incarnation of Mughal ruler Aurangzeb on whose orders temples in Varanasi were being demolished.
“Commission has issued notice to Mr Sanjay Nirupam for prima facie violation of Model Code of Conduct in a speech delivered in Varanasi (UP). He has been asked to furnish his response within 24 hours,” sources in EC said. “The people of this constituency chose a person (PM Narendra Modi) who is actually the modern-day avatar of Aurangzeb,” Mr Nirupam had said.
Because in Varanasi, in the name of corridors hundreds of temples have been demolished on the instruction of Prime Minister Modi,” Mr Nirupam had said at a public meeting on last Tuesday.
He added that on the instruction of the PM a fee of Rs 550 is being charged on devotees visiting the temple to offer prayers to Baba Vishwanath. “This proves what Aurangzeb could not do, is being done by Prime Minister Modi,” Mr Nirupam said adding the Prime Minister who talks about the rights of Hindus is now “demolishing temples and has also imposed ‘jizya’ on devotees”.
Meanwhile, the ECI announced the dates of bye-elections to State Legislative Councils of Bihar, Maharashtra and Telangana where four casual vacancies have arised. The process of elections in these states will begin from May 21 with formal issue of notification and voting will take place on June 7. Counting will be held on the same day of voting.
Beside, term of office of two members of the Rajya Sabha – Dr Manmohan Singh and Santiuse Kujur -- elected from Assam is going to expire on June 14. The elections for these two seats too will be conducted on June 7.
