Barkatullah University mulls course on 'how to be an ideal bride'
Bhopal: Barkatullah University (BU), a premier educational institution of Madhya Pradesh, here, is mulling to start a short-term course to impart sociological and psychological skill training to the girls to make them “sanskari bahus” or ideal brides.
According to BU vice-chancellor, Prof D.C. Gupta, the proposed three-month course, being prepared jointly by departments of sociology, women’s studies and psychology in the university would commence from the next academic session.
“The principal objective of launching the course is to make the girls understand the dynamics of families and thus help create healthy families and society”, he told the media here on Friday.
“The effort is part of women empowerment”, he added.
The course, to be introduced as a pilot project in the university, would incorporate relevant topics from psychology, women’s studies and sociology would impart sociological and psychological skill training to the prospective brides to prepare them to face the post-marriage environment.
“The university should also look beyond academics particularly to take up some responsibility for the society”, a professor in the university said.
According to him, the university planned to admit 30 students in the first batch and later may consider increasing the intake of girls considering the response to the course.
This would be first of its kind course in any educational institution in MP.
Head of the department of sociology in the university Prof S.N. Choudhury however said he was yet to be communicated by the authorities concerned in this regard.
“But, I feel the move is in right direction for empowerment of women and building health families.
It was high time brides were made aware of the dynamics of families since our society currently was passing through a critical juncture witnessing growing divorce cases and disharmony in families”, he added. He said hundreds of such courses were being run in the Pennsylvania University in USA.
