BJP shortlists candidates for 10 Assam seats
Guwahati: After forging an alliance with Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland Peoples Front (BPF), the ruling BJP has shortlisted panel of names of prospective candidates for 10 Lok Sabha constituencies in Assam.
The BJP poll panel, which has decided to field its heavyweight leader and finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma from Tezpur, has sent multiple names to the parliamentary board from all the seats except, Tezpur. The panel has decided to deny ticket to its sitting MP R.P. Sarma from Tezpur.
Informing that for Silchar constituency the names of Rajdeep Roy and Parimal Suklabaidya have been shortlisted, party sources said that Kripanath Mallah and Amaresh Roy are in the panel for Karimganj.
For the Jorhat seat, the names of sitting MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, state minister Topon Kumar Gogoi, Lakhya Konwar and Santanu Gogoi are in the panel, while for Dibrugarh the names of sitting MP Rameswar Teli and Pulak Gohain are in the list.
Sitting MP Pradan Baruah and Haren Deori are in the panel for Lakhimpur. For Guwa-hati, the party has shortlisted sitting MP Bijoya Chakravarty, Bijuli Kalita Medhi, Queen Ojha and Chikimiki Talukdar.
The panel for Nagaon includes union minister Rajen Gohain, MLAs Rupak Sarmah and Angoorlata Deka, and Jitu Goswami. The shortlist for Mangaldai has the names of Ramen Deka, Dilip Saikia and Jayanta Malla Baruah.
The BJP has decidd to contest in 10 out of14 Lok Sabha seats from Assam. It will leave Kaliabor, Dhubri and Barpeta constituencies for the AGP and the Kokrajhar seat for BPF, which has already announced the candidature of state minister Pramila Rani Brahma for Kokrajhar. The AGP has shortlisted Moni Madhab Mahanta from Koliabor, Zaved Islam in Dhubri and Kumar Deepak Das for Barpeta seats.
The BJP and AGP leaders have decided to work from each others’ headquarters to fine-tune the coordination.
It started with Himanta Biswa Sarma, BJP’s Assam in-charge Mahendra Singh and state BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass’ visit to the AGP’s head-office at Ambari on Thursday. The BJP leaders were welcomed and facilitated by AGP president Atul Bora, working president Keshab Mahanta and other senior leaders of the regional party.
