Govt: Rohatgi appointed jurist in Lokpal panel
New Delhi: The Centre on Tuesday informed the Supreme Court that former attorney-general Mukul Rohatgi has been inducted as “eminent jurist” for selection of Lokpal, the anti-corruption ombudsman, at a meeting headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Attorney-general K.K. Venugopal told a bench comprising Justices Ra-njan Gogoi and R. Ban-umathi that the selection panel met on May 11 to pick the eminent person and Mr Rohatgi has been appointed. He said senior advocate P.P. Rao was appointed as an eminent jurist in the panel, but the post became vacant after he passed away last year.
The bench, hearing a contempt petition filed by Common Cause through advocate Prashant Bhushan for not implementing the April 2017 verdict of the apex court in appointing Lokpal, asked the A-G to expedite the process of appo-intment of Lokpal.
