Carol singers booked over conversion charges in MP

Local Christian leaders however denied any attempt at religious conversion.

Bhopal: Six Christmas carol singers have been booked under charges of forcible religious conversion in a Madhya Pradesh town.

A case has been registered against them under Sections 153B (imputations, assertions prejudicial to national integration) and 295 A (outraging religious feelings) of IPC in the Civil Lines police station in district headquarters town of Satna following a complaint by a local that he was lured with money to convert to Christianity, police said on Friday.

Local Christian leaders however denied any attempt at religious conversion.

Catholics Bishop Conference of India (CBCI) said a group of interns undergoing training on priesthood were moving around Satna town, visiting Christian institutions and singing carols late on Thursday night as a part of preparations for Christmas celebrations.

They were attacked by a group of people belonging to a right wing organisation who accused them of indulging in religious conversions in the area.

A church leader told this newspaper that a group of Bajrang Dal activists stopped the march of the Christmas carol singers and later had a tiff with them charging them of indulging in religious conversion.

The activists of the right wing outfit later alerted police.
