SC to Karnataka on Kambala: File reply to Peta PIL
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday asked Karnataka to file its reply in three days to a PIL filed by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) challenging the constitutionality, legality, validity and legitimacy of the law passed by Karnataka government to allow kambala to be conducted in the State.
A three Judge Bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A.M. Kanwilkar and D.Y. Chandrachud had issued notice to Centre and karnaaka last week on PETA’s petition challenging the prevention of cruelty to animals (Karnataka Amen-dment) Ordinance, 2017, making Kambala legal in Karnataka.
Kambala is a folk sport, held traditionally under the auspices of local landlords and households, in coastal Karnataka. Two pairs of buffaloes are tied to ploughs and raced on slush tracks.
Senior counsel Siddharth Luthra, appearing for Peta, pleaded for stay of the operation of the ordinance. He said the President had returned the Bill passed by the State legislature. The investigation proves yet again that buffalo bulls are terrorised in cruel Kambala events.
