Kolkata’s top cop shifted as CID chief
Sharma has informed that the people from Jammu and Kashmir who have been staying in the city are safe.
Kolkata: Anuj Sharma has become the new Kolkata police commissioner replacing Rajeev Kumar who was transferred by the Trinamul Congress government on Tuesday to the criminal investigation department (CID) as its chief since his term got over.
The 1991-batch IPS officer, known to be in chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s good books, was the additional director general (ADG) of law and order at the West Bengal Police in his previous assignment.
He was one of the five senior IPS officers against whom the Union home ministry sought the state government to take action for their presence during Ms Banerjee’s dharna in Esplanade recently.
In mid-2000 Mr Sharma served as deputy commissioner of police (headquarters) of the city police.
Assuming charge, Mr Sharma said, “Kolkata Police has a very strong tradition of public service. Our focus will remain on that. Kolkata Police has been doing a very good job in serving the city. So our main focus will be serving the people.”
He added, “We will focus on core areas of policing: anti-crime, traffic, community policing and specially protection to ladies. Kolkata has been the safest city in the country. We would like to focus on this.
“Even though Kolkata police has been doing an excellent job, We may need to do some fine-tuning or things out of the box.”
