Woman torso found near Kamakhya
Guwahati: In what has triggered the theory of “human sacrifice” just before the Ambubachi Mela, the police on Wednesday recovered a headless body of a woman from the close vicinity of Jay Durga Mandir on the Nilachal Hill atop which the Kamakhya temple is located.
The police said that a severed headless body of the woman was found on stairs that leads to Joy Durga Mandir. Pointing out that the police is yet to identify the body, senior police officers probing the incident said that they are not ruling out any possibility.
“We are probing all possible angles and not ruling out the theory of human sacrifice or it being the case of murder because of some other reason,” said a senior police officer, adding that they are trying to find the head, which may have been thrown in nearby forest areas of the hills. The police said that body may have been thrown near the temple intentionally to mislead the investigation. The incident has also fuelled speculation that it could be a case of human sacrifice since the Kamakhya temple has a history of such practices. It is believed that human sacrifices were made at the temple till the late 17th century.
The incident has created sensation as the state government was gearing up to host Ambubachi Mela from June 22 to 25 in which Assam tourism department is expecting a footfall of more than 25 lakh.
The tourism department of the Assam government (ATDC) is working in full tandem with the district administration and other concerned departments, such as GMC and PWD, to ensure all things are put in order before the festival starts.
Ambubachi Mela is one of the largest religious congregations.
