New Delhi: The Congress on Wednesday expressed concern over the Supreme Court judgment that diluted provisions related to immediate arrest in the SC/ST Act and demanded a review of the same or an amendment in the law.

The party also accused the government of being silent on the issue and alleging that the government counsels did not present their case properly. Speaking to reporters senior leader and MP Anand Sharma said, “There is serious concern over Tuesday’s decision of the Supreme Court. If it is not reviewed, it will be very unfortunate. There is a feeling on insecurity among the SC/STs and other oppressed classes. We feel there should be a review of this decision that will be in national interest.” Asking the government to clarify its stand Mr. Sharma said, “Why is the government silent on this issue. Government should clarify its stand and should present its version before the Supreme Court through the Attorney General. If the government remains silent, it means that the government supports the decision.” While Rajya Sabha MP of Congress Kumari Selja alleged that the development is a result of the BJP-RSS policy, as they are “conspiring to end reservation”. Congress communications in-charge Randeep Surjewala said the Centre and the Maharashtra Government, which were a party on the issue in the case, did not present their case properly.

As the Rajya Sabha convened on Wednesday morning the Congress members demanded that their notice for discussion on this issue should be taken up. Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad said that the issue should be taken up immediately and discussed. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Vijay Goel said that the government is ready for discussion on every issue, but the house could not function as members were protesting.
