Lawyer rejects honourary' membership of PoK's bar
SriNagar: Deepika Singh Rajawat, the lawyer and child rights activist who is appearing in court on behalf of the father of Kathua gang-rape and murder victim, has been accorded ‘honourary membership’ by PoK Supreme Court Bar Association to acknowledge her courage in the fight of justice.
However, Ms Rajawat has rejected the offer and said her consent was not obtained prior to the announcement.
A statement issued by ‘Azad Jammu & Kashmir Supreme Court Bar Association (AJKSCBA)’ in Mirpur (PoK) on Saturday said that Deepika, a Kashmiri Pandit, has been awarded its honourary membership “in acknowledgement of her courageously agitating and representing the (case of ) rape and brutal murder of 8-year-old baby in Kathua despite intimidation and threats to her life and modesty from communal elements in Indian held Jammu and Kashmir.”
Born as Deepika Thusoo in a Kashmiri pandit family of Karihama, a village tucked away midst woods in frontier district of Kupwara, the 38-year-old Deepika earned degree in law at National Law University, Jodhpur. The Thusoo family migrated to Jammu in 1986.
