New Delhi: Buoyed by the verdict in the 2G case by a special court, an upbeat Congress on Thursday refused to heed to the Chair’s plea in the Rajya Sabha for smooth functioning of the House, forcing Chairman M. Venkaiah Naidu to adjourn it for the day.

The Upper House had already been witnessing ruckus and repeated adjournments since the starting of the Winter Session on December 15 over the Congress demanding clarification from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remarks against his predecessor Manmohan Singh but still managed to pass two Bills.

The Lok Sabha, which has also been witnessing ruckus, also managed to pass four Bills.

Soon after the Upper House met for the day, Chairman M. Venkaiah Naidu asked the members to lay the papers on the table and then allowed Leader Of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad to speak.

“Till yesterday we had been demanding the Prime Minister’s clarification on his remarks against Manmohan Singhji but today another incident took place and now we want clarification on both the issues,” said Mr Azad, demanding that the BJP should now prove on which basis they had alleged that there was a scandal of Rs 1.76 lakh crore in the 2G allocation. He added that through “a false campaign, an environment against UPA was created and was the reason we are here in the Opposition benches and you are there in treasury benches”.

The Chairman requested Mr Azad not to speak over the issue as he had not given any notice but he continued.

The Congress members then trooped near the Chairman’s podium and started sloganeering. Despite several requests, when the Congress members continue with their protest, Naidu adjourned the house till 2 pm.

When the House met again, the Chair tried to bring the House in order and let the short duration discussion on future of sports to be taken up. But repeated sloganeering and ruckus forced him to adjourn the House for the day.
