Malkangiri (Odisha): A pregnant woman of Dalapatiguda village under Mathili block in Odisha’s Malkangiri district delivered twin girls at a forest after villagers refused to help her as she married a man of a different caste, reports said on Tuesday.

Gori Pujari (19) on Monday suffered from labour pain while her husband Trilochan Pujari, a tractor driver, was in fields. Her repeated requests to take her to hospital went unheard as villagers had ostracised her for marrying a person belonging to a different caste, following which the couple settled at a hut on the village outskirts.

Left with no other option, Gori decided to walk to the Mathili hospital through a nearby forest route. However, she delivered twin baby girls on the way to the hospital. On being informed, an Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) worker rescued the woman and contacted 108-ambulance.

She was later taken to Mathili community health centre by the ambulance. The condition of the mother and babies was stated to be stable, hospital sources said.
