Gujarat: Police find 2,000-rupee notes worth 10 lakh in a car

The car belonged to a family, which claimed the cash was withdrawn from different bank accounts for a wedding.

Ahmedabad: While several people across the country are struggling to get cash following the demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes, a family from Gujarat’s Ahmedabad drew the attention of police after managing to withdraw Rs 12.4 lakhs, mostly in newly-introduced Rs 2000 denomination notes.

According to a report in NDTV, the notes were found by police when they stopped a car in which three members of a family were travelling.

The family claimed that they had withdrawn the cash from different bank accounts for wedding expenses. However, police seized the money when the family members failed to prove that the money was meant for a marriage ceremony.

The Gujarat police handed over the cash to tax officials.

The Centre had on Tuesday announced that people can withdrawal cash up to Rs 2.5 lakhs for to make payments for wedding.
