Thanjavur: A conference organised by the 'Thanjavur Periya Koil Urimai Meetpu Kuzhu' here on Wednesday appealed to the government to conduct the consecration of the Big Temple built by King Raja Raja Cholan at Thanjavur, scheduled to be held on February 5 as per Tamil tradition by rendering Tamil mantras.

A resolution adopted at the conference said the consecration to be held on 22 of Tamil month of 'Thai' in the Thiruvalluvar year 2051, ie on February 5, should be performed as per Tamil tradition and by rendering Tamil mantras instead of Sanskrit mantras.

There are court orders and government orders for using Tamil as the language for pujas at the sanctum sanctorum and conducting consecration as per Tamil tradition, the resolution said and added that Tamil Nadu government approved Tamil mantras for Siva temples and Vishnu temples based on the order. Archakas studying in archaka colleges are taught these mantras, the resolution claimed.

Quoting a Supreme Court order in which it is pronounced that all people belonging to all castes can become archakas in the Adi Sivacharyargal versus Tamil Nadu government writ petition 354, 2006, on December 16, 2015, the resolution said that SC order clearly states that agamas do not prohibit any caste people from becoming archakas. The order adds same agamas do not prohibit doing pujas at the sanctum sanctorum in Tamil.

Moreover king Raja Raja Chola retrieved Thirumurais from Chidambaram and appointed othuvars to sing them in the temple. "So as per legal orders and also in the tradition of Tamil people, consecration of Big Temple should be done in Tamil tradition by rendering Tamil mantras. The Tamil Nadu government should take steps for the same", the resolution said.

A yagam was performed at the beginning of the conference to show that they can be conducted using Tamil mantras. Persons who called themselves Tamil Siddhars conducted the yagam. P. Maniarasan, coordinator of Thanjai Periyakoil Urimai Meetpu Kuzhu, V. V. Swaminathan, former HR&CE minister, Ponnuswami Adigalar of Hindu Veda Marumalarchi Iyakkam, participated in the conference.
