District official annuls UP BJP minister's marriage

It was apparently designed to send the right signals to Muslims, who had been opposing the government decision.

Lucknow: A district official has annulled the registration of marriage of UP minister Mohsin Raza, the lone Muslim minister in the state government, because the latter failed to present himself in court and take the certificate within the stipulated time of 90 days.

Mr Mohsin Raza, who has been married for almost 16 years now, had got his marriage registered on August 3 this year after the Yogi Adityanath government made it compulsory for all marriages to be registered. His ‘marriage’ in court was made into a major media event with his family members standing by his side.

It was apparently designed to send the right signals to Muslims, who had been opposing the government decision.

Some of the Muslim groups had been opposed to the decision saying that their ‘nikahnama’ was already a certification of marriage among Muslims.

Additional district magistrate trans-Gomti Anil Kumar told reporters here that the minister had failed to collect the certificate within the 90 day period even though he was given reminders on phone.

The additional district magistrate said that in order to get his marriage registered, the minister would now be required to make a fresh application.

The minister said that he could not take the certificate since he was busy but would not complete the formalities in this regard.
