Mike Pence calls Modi American ally'

PM Modi also replied on Twitter to the congratulatory messages of several other world leaders.

New Delhi: In remarks that may raise some eyebrows, US Vice-president Mike Pence on Friday referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as an “American ally” in his congratulatory message following the huge electoral win of PM Modi’s ruling BJP on Thursday. In his reply, PM Modi referred to the Indo-US “partnership” for “peace and shared prosperity”.

Late on Thursday, US President Donald Trump had also congratulated Mr Modi on his “big” election victory and had said “great things” are in store for the bilateral strategic ties in PM Modi’s second term in office.

Mr Pence tweeted, “Congrats to an American ally & friend PM @narendramodi, on his party’s win in India’s parliamentary election. This was a strong display of the Indian people’s commitment to democracy! We look forward to continuing to work with India for a freer, safer, & more prosperous region.”

PM Modi replied, “This is a victory of democracy, which India and the US cherish. I will continue to promote our partnership with the US for peace and shared prosperity for our two countries and the world.”

PM Modi also replied on Twitter to the congratulatory messages of several other world leaders. In reply to the message of Russian President Vladimir Putin, he said, “Thank you @Krem-linRussia, and my dear friend, for your warm greetings. Your support for taking our special and privileged strategic partnership to new heights is invaluable. I look forward to our meeting soon.”

In reply to the messages of the Saudi King and Crown Prince, PM Modi said, “Thank you, Your Majesty @KingSalman and Your Highness Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for heartfelt greetings. India cherishes deep-rooted and multi-faceted ties with the Kingdom. Look forward to further enhancing our relations for the benefit our citizens.”

In reply to the British PM Theresa May’s congratulatory message, PM Modi said, “Thank you @10DowningStreet @theresa_may for your wishes. I am committed to further strengthening the strategic partnership between India and UK in the years ahead.”
