Assam: Hard-core NDFB rebel killed in joint operation of army, police

Encounter took place at Bansbari village under Panbari police station where militant was taking shelter.

Guwahati: In a joint operation, the Indian Army and Assam Police on Tuesday gunned down a hardcore rebel of National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) in Western Assam’s Kokrajhar district.

Security forces also recovered an AK-47 rifle, its ammunition and grenade from the slain militant.

The defence spokesperson Colonel Sumeet Newton said that encounter took place at Bansbari village under Panbari police station where militant was taking shelter.

“Based on intelligence inputs, a joint operation was launched by the Army and Assam Police on Monday night in the area. Around 6 am Tuesday morning, the patrol party was fired upon. Our troops retaliated with controlled fire and in the gun battle, a terrorist was killed,” Newton said.

Sources told Deccan Chronicle that security forces had specific input on movement of NDFB rebels in the area and the intelligence agency was keeping a close watch on armed rebels, trying to enter Western Assam. The slain militant had entered the area recently, the sources said.

They added that a combing operation was still on in the area where movement of NDFB rebels was noticed.
