Families of Ulfa rebels to assist in surrender?

Over 150 still roaming along Myanmar border.

Guwahati: The security forces have started mobilising family members of outlawed Ulfa-I cadres in Assam and taking them to India-Myanmar border to persuade their respective children, who after being driven out of their hideouts in Taga area of Myanmar are roaming in bordering areas, to surrender.

Informing that more than 150 cadres of Ulfa-I (United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent), NDFB (National Demo-cratic Front of Bodoland) and KLO (Kamatapur Liberation Organiation) are still roaming in bordering areas and not crossing over to India fearing Army action, security sources said that since January 29, the day Myanmar Army has launched operations in Northern Myanmar to drive out Indian insurgents from its territory, more than 60 Ulfa-I, NDFB and KLO cadres have surrendered to the security forces but more than 150 are still holed up in border areas.

Indicating that idea of mobilising the family members of cadres was aimed at to give them confidence to surrender, security sources said that Myanmar Army has been maintaining a constant pressure on Indian insurgents in northern Myanmar to vacate their territory.

Security sources said that some of the cadres have arms in their possession, so they are afraid of crossing over to India fearing encounter by security forces which has intensified the vigil along India-Myanmar international border in Arunachal Pradesh.

Indicating that Myanmar Army was now preparing to launch operation in areas adjoining the border with Manipur, security sources said that the coordination committee (CorCom), a conglomerate of seven Manipur valley-based militant outfits has shifted its camps from Taga in Northern Myanmar to areas adjoining Manipur.

Asserting that Myanmar Army has also recovered huge number of sophisticated weapons from Indi-an insurgent groups, security sources said that Ulfa-I and NDFB leadership was not issuing arms to their cadres as most of them have scattered in Naga villages of Myanmar after their camps, mostly in Taga area were demolished by Myanmar Army.

Security forces said that Myanmar Army has warned its citizens from giving shelter to Indian insurgent leaders.
