New Delhi: Looking to expand India’s soft power, the Narendra Modi government has chalked out a strategy to coordinate with regulatory authorities in other countries and help ayurveda and other traditional Indian drugs get recognition and acceptance as “medicines” there.

The ministry in collaboration with the WHO is mulling to develop standards for ayurveda drugs and register them in other countries as per their legal provisions. This will ensure that they are sold as drugs and not supplement as is being done presently, said an official. As part of the strategy, the government is also working hard to get formal approvals to ayurveda doctors to practice abroad.

Welcoming the government initiative, Sanchit Sharma, executive director of AIMIL Pharma
