Assam: Normalcy limping back to Dima Hasao district
Guwahati: The normalcy is limping back to trouble-torn Dima Hasao district but situation continues to be tense with growing demand of tribal organizations to make public the draft agreement signed between the government of India and NSCN (I-M).
This was more visible when a delegation comprising the representatives of 28 ethnic groups of Assam led by All Assam Students Union advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya visited Maibong on Monday and addressed a public rally.
Bhattacharya while asserting said that even an inch of Assam land would not be allowed to go to proposed Nagalim. He said, “It was the responsibility of the state and the central government to remove such fear from the mind of the people.”
He also said that government of India should make the Draft Agreement signed with NSCN (I-M) public as it was giving reason to the people to doubt the intention of the government.
Reiterating that people of Assam are with residents of Dima Hasao district, veteran student leader said, “It was amusing to see the silence of the central and the state government when a person called Jagdamba Mal claimed to have proposed a separate development authorities for Naga inhabited districts of Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh and Assam.”
He said that it was the responsibility of the government to reject such reports. “Who is Jagdamba Mal and in what capacity he is making such statement,” asked Bhattacharya while justifying the anger of people living in Dima Hasao a district adjoining the border with Nagaland.

An employee of accountant general’s office Jagdamba Mal however claimed that he had made some suggestions to settle the Naga issue but a reporter quoted him out of context.
He also clarified in local newspapers that he was not the member of RSS and made this suggestion in his individual capacity.
Mal who claimed to have spent 40-years in Nagaland was also engaged in social work in the area during his service.
Bhattacharya who on behalf of 28-ethnic groups assured the tribal communities and residents of Dima Hasao district to be the part of their struggle, also warned the people to be vigilant against the forces trying to provoke them for violent movement.
“We will not allow anybody to take away even a single inch of land of our motherland but our path should be of non-violent movement,” said the student’s leader accompanied by 28 tribal leaders including All Bodo Students Union president Pramod Boro.
