2-day event at India Gate to celebrate North-East culture, food

Northeast Calling' to be part of DoNER ministry's series of events to be held around India.

New Delhi: The Narendra Modi government is set to celebrate North-East India by showcasing its richness and diversity of culture, food, art, music and various other aspects of the region by holding a two-day event at the India Gate lawns from September 9 to 10.

The event, North East Calling, comes as part of the ministry for development of Norther-Eastern region’s series of events this year, to be held across the country for forming a connect between the people of the North-East and the rest of the country. The events have been planned as part of the government’s attempts at bridging the divide that still exists even after 70 years of Independence. “In a symbolic gesture, the series would be launched at India Gate, the symbol of national pride and unity, on the anniversary of this ministry,” sources stated.

The series of events were planned after a spate of racially charged incidents took place in various parts of the country against the people of North-East.

“It has been the mandate of our ministry to help clear such perceptions and to work on the growth and development of the region. So, in order to expand our efforts and prevent the ill-will between our citizens from expanding any further,” sources added.

“With this event, we are looking to familiarise people across India to the culture, food, art, music and various other aspects of the North-Eastern region. There will also be an attempt to promote the spirit of unity and brotherhood and to clear any apprehensions that the rest of the nation has about our fellow citizens from the North-East. It will be about joining hearts as we encourage the nation to embrace every aspect of what makes each one of us unique,” sources added.

As a special event, the IAS officers of the 2015 batch will be joining hands with the the designers from the North-East and the rest of the country by participating in the Handloom Demo Show, presenting clothes made from North-Eastern handlooms, sources said.

The event is expected to help promote the business and entrepreneurial activities in NE and enable partnership opportunities in the region to the rest of the nation. It is also expected to promot products, artists, designers and entrepreneurs of the region. It will also showcase all the efforts being undertaken in the North-East by the ministry of DoNER, other Central government ministries and all state governments.
