MHA keeping eye on Bangla election

Guwahati: The ministry of home affairs is keeping a close watch on the political scenario of Bangladesh as the change in government may have the direct bearing on the security scenario of Northeastern states and West Bengal.

Pointing out that the general elections in Bangladesh are scheduled to take place on December 30 and the main contest will be between the ruling Awami League and the United Front led by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, authoritative security sources in the MHA said the present government in Banglad-esh has been maintaining very good relation with India, which contributed immensely in maintain the law and order in Northeastern states.

Stating that the present regime not only uprooted the bases of Northeast insurgent groups from Bangladesh but also arrested and handed over several top Ulfa and NDFB leaders to India, security sources said that the security agencies of both the countries have been maintaining a regular coordination besides sharing intelligence about the movement of insurgents.

Pointing out that in case of change of government in Bangladesh, the security scenario of India may also change, security sources said that it was the previous regime of BNP when Bangladesh had become the safe heaven of Northeast insurgents and fundamentalist forces.

Admitting that Northeast insurgent groups are not in a position to set up camp and shift bases to Bangladesh, security sources said no government would like to allow their territory to be used as safe sanctuary for separatist activities. Security sources however feared that change of guard in Dhaka may result in growth of fundamentalist forces, which is a cause of worry for India.
