Bindi Yadav, who is currently in jail for trying to cover up his son Rocky Yadav who had allegedly murdered a teenaged student Aditya Sachdeva in Gaya last Saturday, is not a small name for locals.

They remember him and still see him as a don with top political connections. Sources from Gaya said, “He was once close to RJD Chief Lalu Yadav”. Bindi Yadav, who had unsuccessfully contested two Assembly elections from Garua constituency as an independent, managed a legislative council seat from ruling party JD(U) after he was denied a membership from the RJD.

JD(U) insiders say Mr Nitish Kumar turned down his offer because of the cases he had against him but he obliged him by accommodating his wife Manorama Devi into the party and making her an MLC.

Bindi Yadav, who was once a small-time cycle thief, later teamed up with a local goon and started indulging in big crimes. Over the period he and his partner became a terror for Gaya.

By the year 1990, defying administration, Bindi Yadav had become a big name in Gaya and that was the era when Mr Lalu Yadav had emerged as a new power centre in Bihar.

While Mr Lalu Yadav held the post of the chief minister, he started supporting Bindi Yadav and eventually inducted him into RJD.

Bindi Yadav even managed to win the local body election in 2001 and became the district board chairman. In 2011, he became a contractor but was later arrested. According to sources, the police during his arrest had also recovered several sophisticated weapons like AK-47, SLR and live cartridges.

There are also reports that he had the backing of Naxalites and they helped him in his activities in and around Gaya. Bindi Yadav currently has several cases related to kidnapping, murder and possessing illegal arms. Sources say he has more than 11 cases pending against him.

He runs several factories in and around Gaya. According to a highly placed source, he currently has assets worth more than Rs 100 crore or “maybe around two-to-three hundred crores”.
