BJP’s priority is to seal India-Bangladesh border: Amit Shah
Bharatiya Janata Party president Amit Shah here on Saturday announced that if the BJP-led alliance formed government in Assam, it would investigate all the corruption charges against the state’s current Tarun Gogoi government.
Addressing a press conference Mr Shah, who was here on the last leg of campaign in the state, told reporters, “We are committed to the provisions of the Assam Accord. The government will abide and implement the Assam Accord of 1985 in letter and spirit if voted to power here.”
On the matter of deportation of detected Bangladeshis, Mr Shah said, “It is a matter on which the governments of Assam, India and Bangladesh will have to work together.”
The BJP president further said the work of updating the National Register of Citizens will be pursued in a time-bound and accelerated manner if the coalition is voted to power. Pointing out that the biggest stumbling block in sealing the border was the border dispute, Mr Shah said, “We have already settled the border dispute with Bangladesh which will enable us in sealing the international border.”
He said, “This is a defining election not just for Assam but the entire Northeast as its result will determine whether the region marches together with the rest of the country on the ladder of development or is left behind.”
Mr Shah exuded confidence that the BJP-led alliance of Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) and two Tiwa and Rabha bodies will not only win simple majority, but two-third majority in the polls.
Responding to charges of Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi who accused Bharatiya Janata Party leader Himanta Biswa Sarma’s indulgence in various corruption cases, Mr Shah said, “Chief minister heads the government but Mr Gogoi is trying to say as if he was not running the government in Assam.”
The first phase polling for 65 constituencies in the state was held on April 4 last, while the second and final phase is slated on April 11.
