Chargesheet filed against Chhota Rajan
The supplementary chargesheet filed by the CBI against deported don Chhota Rajan in the murder of senior journalist J. De, does not have any direct evidence against the accused and depends mostly on circumstantial evidence. The most powerful evidence against Rajan in the charge sheet seems to be an intercepted conversation between him and one of his aides, which, according to reports from the Forensic Science Laboratory, is the voice of Rajan himself.
There are recorded statements of journalists whom Rajan called up and accepted responsibility for ordering Mr Dey’s killing. According to CBI, the reason behind Dey’s murder was a few news articles written by him, which showed Rajan in poor light and a book he was writing, which was almost ready for publishing, titled Chindi – Rags to Riches.
According to the CBI, not only did Rajan and his gang dislike the term “Chindi”, they came to know that Dey’s book was to contain stories of 20 Chindis including Rajan apart from material that would expose Rajan’s fake patriotic mask used to secure himself. Most importantly, Rajan strongly suspected that Dey was working for his once boss-turned arch enemy, Dawood Ibrahim and trying to portray him as a hero as against Rajan. Rajan believed that Dey was providing information to D-company and wanted Rajan eliminated which is why he decided to kill him. In his later interviews to journalists, he regretted the decision however.
The CBI further said that there was scientific evidence in the form of CFSL Voice Comparison Report which established that Rajan had declared Dey as a traitor. Dey’s widow, mother, sister, few colleagues and close friends told CBI that Dey was very upset nearly a month before his murder and had told his wife that he was going to die but not due to illness.
