Congress decision on ‘Priyanka for UP polls’ still awaited
On the culmination of the Deoria to Delhi kisan yatra of Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi, the party is planning a mega closing ceremony.
Sources say the Congress high command may also rope in Priyanka Gandhi — previously charged to look after the constituencies of Amethi and Rae Bareli — for the campaign in the election-bound Uttar Pradesh by giving her a bigger role.
However, the final approval on this is still awaited. Besides, the party is planning to start the campaigning for the election from Anand Bhawan in Allahabad on the 99th birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Interestingly, the posters of Ms Priyanka Gandhi have started surfacing outside the constituencies of Rae Bareli and Amethi.
Sources said Congress workers have been allowed to put up her posters along with those of Mr Rahul Gandhi.
The demand to launch Ms Priyanka Gandhi into active campaigning has been emanating in the Congress quarters since long.
When senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad had taken over as the general secretary in-charge of the state, he had said, “The workers want Priyanka ji to campaign and I will convey this to her.” Meanwhile, Ms Gandhi held several meeting with stakeholders and senior UP leaders.
Though the state assembly elections are still a few months away, Congress has been going ahead with the campaign extensively.
The party has been targeting farmers’ issues and has promised complete farm-loan waiver. In the late stages, the party wants to rope in Ms gandhi to have a final impact.
