Guwahati: Assam police on Saturday filed chargesheet against 48 people in gruesome mob-lynching incident of Karbi Anglong in June this year.

The two young men, Nilotpal Das and Abhijit Nath, who went for a tour to a tourist spot in the district, were beaten to death by a mob of locals over rumours that they were child-lifters.

Assam director general of police Kuladhar Saikia told reporters that they have prepared a water-tight case with strong evidence to ensure that those responsible for gruesome incident are brought to book. “The accused have been charged with murder, wrongful restraint, unlawful assembly to commit offence of common object, and other sections of the IPC,” said the DGP while pointing out that police have filed the chargesheet before the court of chief judicial magistrate court within 90 days of the incident. He said that police have also submitted audio-visual evidence of the incident to the court. He said that the 844-page chargesheet contains around 900 supporting documents.

Informing that they have sufficient number of eye-witnesses to substantiate the charges before the court of law, Mr Saikia said, “The incidents of mob lynching has been a major area of concern at national level also. It is discussed at various forums now a day. We have set an example by carrying out investigation within the stipulated timeframe.”

Pointing out that police had formed a special investigation team to investigate the case, Mr Saikia said that they would also plead the judiciary for fast-track trial of the case so that accused are given exemplary punishment.
