Lucknow: In a shocking incident, a 35-year-old dalit woman was thrashed and then paraded naked after she informed her family of being gangraped.

The incident took place in Kurara in Hamirpur district. According to the victim’s husband, who belongs to the Nishad community, his wife was gangraped by four men, namely, Hori Lal, Chhote Lal, Jai Kishore and Gagan, who allegedly barged into their house on June 29. The husband said that the four men had been threatening the survivor’s nephew, who was allegedly having an affair with a local girl.

“The accused persons asked my wife not to inform anyone about the gang rape or else she would have to face the consequences.  When my wife informed us about the incident, the accused again attacked her, brutalised her private parts with sticks and stripped her naked. They marched her through the village and no one came forward to help us,” the husband said.

The woman’s family lodged an FIR about this incident on July 1 and the four accused were arrested on Monday night.

Kurara SHO Deen Dayal Singh said that all the four accused have been arrested and booked under relevant sections of the IPC.

Hamirpur SP Ajay Kumar said there were complaints of police’s partisan behaviour in the matter and this will also be investigated.

“We will conduct an inquiry regarding the alleged bias role of Kurara police. The policemen found guilty will face serious departmental action,” the SP said.

The victim has been sent for medical examination.

Samajwadi spokesperson Sunil Singh Sajan said that the incident reflected the kind of situation that prevails in Uttar Pradesh. “No amounts of claims and booklets can take away from the fact that the law and order situation has hit rock bottom in Uttar Pradesh. Atrocities on OBCs and dalits have increased,” he said.
