CBI arrests main accused after 24 yrs

New Delhi: In a major breakthrough into a bomb attack at the Chennai office of RSS in1993, the CBI has finally arrested one of the main accused, Mushtaq Ahmed, in the case.

As many as 11 persons were killed in the bombing following the case was transferred to CBI which had launched a massive hunt for Mushtaq Ahmed who was on the run for almost 24 years.

He was arrested on Friday morning from outskirts of Chennai.

The investigating agency had also announced a reward of '10 lakh for Mushtaq Ahmed. Investigations have revealed that RDX was used in the blast which took place on August 8, 1993.

According to the CBI, Ahmed was one of the conspirators of the case as he had not only helped in procuring the explosives for making the bomb but also helped arrange logistical support for some of the other accused persons.

The case was transferred to CBI in 1993 following which the investigating agency filed the chargesheet against 18 of the accused persons under different provisions of TADA, IPC and the Explosive Substances Act. Following the trial in the case a special court had acquitted four persons which included SA Basha, founder of the banned al-Ummah due to lack of evidence in 2007.
