Congress leader jailed for old case, bailed
Lucknow: Veteran Congress leader and former BHU student union president Chanchal Singh, 65, was arrested, jailed and then released within 24 hours of arrest in a 40-year-old case on Wednesday. Also, the court pulled up the police for arrested the leader.
According to the police, an FIR was registered against Chanchal Singh on complaint of the then IAS officer T.D. Gaur on March 2, 1982, for threatening and interrupting government work charges in Badlapur block office. The police had filed the charge sheet in court but Mr Singh did not respond to the summons issued by the court. Following this, the court had issued non-bailable warrant against him and the Badalapur police arrested him on Wednesday and presented him in the court of the additional chief judicial magistrate (Fifth) Amar Singh from where he was sent to judicial custody. After the bail, Mr Singh said,
“The then additional district magistrate T.D. Gaur had come for inspection in Maharajganj block and I had gone to meet him. I entered his room without an appointment and this enraged the officer who got a case registered against me under Section 353 of IPC.
