J&K constable dies in bid to foil weapon-snatching by militants

Reports said that a group of gunmen appeared in Budgam's Soibug area and tried to force their entry into a police guard-post.

Srinagar: A policeman was killed while foiling a weapon snatching attempt by suspected militants in Jammu and Kashmir’s central district of Budgam.

Reports said that a group of gunmen appeared in Budgam’s Soibug area and tried to force their entry into a police guard-post apparently with the intention to snatch weapons from cops. They asked a police constable Shamim Ahmed who was unarmed and leaving for a nearby mosque to offer Friday prayers to lead them into the guard-post.

“But Ahmed instead of obeying the diktat and without caring for his own life raised an alarm drawing the attention of his colleagues who were inside the guard-post,” said a police spokesman.

The militants, while fleeing, opened fire, critically injuring Ahmed, a resident of Chak-e-Hanjan in Yaripora area of southern Kulgam district of Kashmir.
