Youth lynched for objecting to firecrackers
Guwahati: In yet another bizarre incident of mob lynching, a youth was beaten to death at a wedding ceremony, for opposing the bursting of firecrackers by people attending the wedding ceremony in lower Assam’s Nalbari district on Tuesday night.
Police which rushed to spot soon after the incident took place said that they have arrested six persons who were the part of the crowd which lynched the 35-year-old labourer, identified as Jatin Das, at Ghorathal village in the district.
The firecrackers were burst by the bride's family to mark the groom's arrival to their house and a splinter from it had hit Mr Das, police said.
The victim pleaded that the firecrackers should not be burst which angered the wedding revellers. They allegedly attacked him and beat him up which led to his death on the spot, the police said.
Police have also picked up the bride and her parents and taken to the police station after the lynching and the wedding ceremony was not allowed to be conducted.
Tension prevailed in the area as angry local villagers demanded that the last rites Mr das should be carried out in the courtyard of the bride's house. However police managed to defuse the situation.
Assam Director General of Police Kuladhar Saikia described the incident as “unfortunate” and said the situation at Ghorathal village was under control and is being monitored.
Local residents of the area said that the attackers were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. “Mr Das who also went to attend the wedding ceremony as invitee had his dinner and came out for a walk when the altercation started,” he said.
