Man beats woman to death as bystander films it in Maharashtra's Vasai town

In the footage, people could be seen walking away or driving their motorcycles and moving ahead

Mumbai: Maharashtra was shocked by the brutal murder of a 22-year-old woman, who was beaten to death by her boyfriend in Vasai in broad daylight on Tuesday morning. The incident was recorded by bystander’s cameras, but no one dared to intervene and stop the assault. Police have arrested the accused.

The assault occurred in the middle of the road when the accused, Rohit Yadav, was seen chasing the victim Arti Yadav with the spanner and repeatedly hitting the girl on her head and chest after which she fell down. Thereafter, he rained more than a dozen blows on her with the spanner.

A bystander was seen trying to stop Rohit, however, he pushed him away and threatened to hit him with the spanner. After the man backed off, there was no attempt to stop him.

In the footage, people could be seen walking away or driving their motorcycles and moving ahead. But no one came to the girl’s help.

After the girl lay motionless, the accused was heard screaming “kyun kiya, kyun kiya aisa mere sath?” (why did you do this to me?).

The motive behind the assault was reportedly a recent breakup after a five-year relationship. Senior Police Inspector Jairam Ranaware, who heads the Waliv police station, said.

“Breaking off the relationship seems to be the cause (of the murder). They both were working in the industrial area. The man used an industrial spanner to hit the girl several times. There were 18 wounds on her body. It is seen in the video that there was a huge crowd there to see the murder but no one saved her,” he added.

The police have launched an investigation into the matter. Rohit has been arrested and has been charged with murder.

Maharashtra State Commission for Women’s Chairperson Rupali Chakankar termed the incident as ‘disgrace to humanity.’ “It is very worrying that no one came to help when there is a large number of people there,” she said.

Taking serious note of the incident, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis directed the police to probe the incident thoroughly and ensure stringent punishment to the culprit. “The murder of a young woman in Vasai is very serious and unfortunate. I have directed the police to take strict action, conduct a thorough investigation and ensure the most severe punishment to the accused by producing strong evidence in the court," he said.
