Tarun Tejpal to face trial in Goa for sex assault

North Goa district judge Vijaya Pol fixed September 23 as the next date of hearing.

New Delhi: The former Tehalka editor Tarun Tejpal to face trial as Supreme Court on Monday rejected his plea challenging the charges framed against him in a case of alleged sexual assault and wrongful confinement of his junior woman colleague in a five star hotel in Goa in November 2013.

North Goa district judge Vijaya Pol fixed September 23 as the next date of hearing.

Describing the charge as “serious and morally abhorrent”, a bench of Justice Arun Mishra and Justice B.R. Gavai lifted the stay on the trial court proceedings and directed its completion in six months time.

The trial court in Goa had in 2017 framed charges against Tejpal for alleged sexual assault and wrongful confinement. Bombay high court had in December 2017, dismissed Tejpal’s plea against the framing of charges. A Goa court had framed charges against Tejpal under IPC Section 354-A (Sexual Harassment), 376 (Rape), 376(2)(K) (rape of a woman by a person being in the position of control or dominance over the woman).
