A protest shutdown and a security lockdown paralysed life in the Kashmir Valley for the second day Thursday as the J&K police and CRPF personnel in riot gear enforced curfew-like restrictions in key parts of the summer capital. Uninterrupted curfew remained in force in Handwara and its neighbourhood.

The authorities have said the curfew and curfew-like restrictions will continue in these areas on Friday.

Mobile Internet services were suspended as many took to social networking sites earlier to vent their anger after the killing of four people in the Handwara firing earlier this week. Also, photos and videos of the security forces’ “atrocities” were uploaded on Facebook and Twitter, and circulated via WhatsApp. Rail services stayed suspended on Thursday.
