Drive to nab Ulfa linkmen launched
With declining violence, the security forces have launched an intensive operation to squeeze the network of linkmen for outlawed Ulfa (I) and NDFB in Assam.
Disclosing that security forces have arrested more than 10 such linkmen for the militant outfits, security sources told this newspaper that top NDFB leader G. Biadai was holed up in Bhutan and calling their cadres desperately for money. Security forces, keeping a close watch on the movements of such most-wanted militant leaders have foiled at least three attempts of NDFB linkmen to transfer money through bank accounts.
Pointing out that instead of extortion, militants are asking their linkmen to collect donations, security sources said that the anti-talk faction of NDFB tried to pressurise a block development officer and even teachers of their old link to manage some donations and transfer it to their accounts.
Pointing out that security forces foiled all those attempts by quickly catching them, security sources said that the anti-talk faction of Ulfa was also trying to mount pressure on their linkmen to mobilise fund but security forces are keeping a close watch.
Pointing out that the anti-talk faction of Ulfa has managed to recruit a new batch of cadres with the help of its linkmen in Upper Assam’s Sibsagar, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia district, security sources said that a 21-member team of new recruits left Neelgari camp of Ulfa in Myanmar for arms training in Taga camp.
Informing that Ulfa (I) linkmen are suspected to have roped in some more youth to join them, security sources said that there have been attempts to check it.
Security sources, however, said that the level of violence has significantly come down in the past few years but sustained pressure was necessary to stop them from reviving their striking capabilities.
