The lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community may get a major boost in their fight for legal acceptance by British singer Elton John.

Speaking exclusively with this newspaper at the 21st International AIDS conference in Durban on Wednesday, Sir Elton said: “India is definitely on our radar as one of the countries where we have to make LGBT feel more comfortable. We will fight for their rights, their health.”

While many counties have repealed sodomy laws and decriminalised homosexuality, the fight in India, Sir Elton said, makes him “feel devastated”.

“No matter what colour, no matter what sexual orientation, no matter what religious belief, everyone in this world is equal. We all came out from the woman’s womb, we will all die equal, what happens in between is circus,” he said and added, “We have been to India to look at what needs to be done It’s a very difficult situation in India. Unfortunately LGBT has been losing ground. It’s something that we have to try and address and it’s not an easy situation but.”

He has raised £350 million since 1992 for the fight against HIV/AIDS.
