Flood situation in Bihar worsens
With water level in Kosi, Gandak, Bagmati and Ganga rivers swelling, the flood situation in Bihar turned worse on Sunday.
According to a report, 28 persons have perished and more than 2 lakh have migrated to other places for safety after flood water entered their villages. There are also reports that more than 20 lakh people in Bihar have been badly affected due to severe flood.
With flood water gushing into fresh areas, more than 2000 villages are completely submerged in water.
The worst hit districts are Purnea, Kishanganj, Katihar, Supaul, Saharsa, Darbhanga, Araria and Madhepura.
According to sources, a large section of people in the affected zones have taken refuge on highways while some have taken shelter in local school buildings.
The disaster management department, in view of the deteriorating situation in Bihar, has deployed 587 personnel of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and state disaster response force (SDRF) in the flood affected zone. The department has also set up 413 relief camps in areas where the situation is grim.
According to SDRF personnel deployed in Purnea, “we ensure that people stuck in flood hit villages are rescued and brought to camps where officials provide aid to them.” They said, “We give priority to women, children and old people.”
Deputy chief minister Tejaswi Yadav accompanied with water resource minister Lallan Singh visited the flood affected Supaul district on Sunday to take stock of the situation and said that the “rescue and relief operation is being carried out and the concerned departments are directly monitoring the relief work.”
Mr Yadav also sternly warned officials and directed them to ensure safety of flood affected people after he found some lapses in the repair work of the Kosi embankments.
