Free admission for disabled in Assam

The BJP-led government in Assam has started the process of filling up the vacancy of over 38,000 teachers by announcing the appointment of 7,234 teachers across 10 districts.

The BJP-led government in Assam has started the process of filling up the vacancy of over 38,000 teachers by announcing the appointment of 7,234 teachers across 10 districts.

Assam education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma who announced this here on Sunday also informed that the government will make education from higher secondary to university level free for the differently-abled from the current session.

To ensure transparency in posting these teachers, Mr Sarma said the department has introduced a computerised lottery system. The appointment letter for these teachers will be uploaded on the websites of education or associated departments from where they can download and join their assigned schools from June 27. Six leading educationists were called to oversee the lottery, conducted on Saturday, Mr Sarma informed the reporters.

He, however, added that 30,000 posts of teachers are vacant in Assam which can’t be filled up as the state does not have enough candidates with a B.Ed degree or diploma. “We can appoint the remaining 30,700 TET-passed candidates temporarily working under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan. We are making arrangements so that they can acquire the [B.Ed/D.Ed] degree through distance learning,” he said.

Appointment and regularisation of teachers was one of the BJP’s election promises. This was the second major step since Sarbananda Sonowal’s BJP-led alliance government took charge on May 24.

The education department last week made college and higher education free for students belonging to families whose combined annual income was less than Rs 1 lakh.

About the appointment of teachers he informed that at least 30% of the appointed teachers were women, as per norms.

Mr Sarma however said that 30,000 posts of teachers are vacant in Assam, but they cannot be filled up, as the state does not have enough candidates with a B Ed degree or diploma.

“We can appoint the remaining 30,700 TET-passed candidates temporarily working under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan. We are making arrangements so that they can acquire the [B Ed/D Ed] degree through distance learning,” Mr Sarma said.
