Garo militants join platform of northeast militants in Myanmar
In what has become a matter of serious concern for the security agencies in Assam, the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) of Meghalaya has also joined the United Liberation Front of West South East Asia. Pointing out that anti-talk faction of the Ulfa was instrumental in roping in the GNLA, security sources told this newspaper that a top Ulfa commander, Drishti Rajkhowa who recently visited Garo hills in Meghalaya, played a key role in taking the GNLA in their fold.
Informing that security agencies had prior input on this development, sources said that a joint call to boycott the celebrations of Republic Day in Northeastern states had made it more apparent.
The GNLA was signatory to the joint appeal of the conglomerate with Coordination Committee (CorCom), and Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC).
The anti-talks faction of Ulfa, National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Khaplang), National Democratic Front of Bodoland (Songbijit) and Meitei outfits of Manipur had formed this common platform to unite militant outfits of the region in Myanmar.
Informing that rampaging GNLA was not the part of this formation, security sources said that anti-talk faction of Ulfa was keen on roping in the GNLA.
Warning that Ulfa may use the network of GNLA to execute their offensive plan in Assam, security sources said that anti-talk faction of Ulfa was under pressure from all corner to prove their striking power and make their presence felt.
Despite several attempts of launching offensive, the anti-talk faction of Ulfa has not succeeded in launching any offensive in the state for a long.
