Kiran Kumar appointed ISRO chief
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday picked the seniormost space scientist, Alur Seelin Kiran Kumar, to head Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) for a three-year term.
“It is a big responsibility for me as many legends have occupied that chair in the past. We have a whole lot of things lined up from the development of new launch vehicles to launch of several satellites in the days ahead. We have to meet many commitments be it in the form of additional transponders for communication and broadcast or payloads to forecast the weather,” Mr Kiran Kumar, who has designed instruments for a wide array of Indian satellites and probes, including Chandrayaan-I and the Mars Orbiter Mission, told this newspaper. Mr. Kiran Kumar, currently serving as Director of Space Applications Centre (SAC), Ahmedabad, will also hold the posts of secretary, department of space (DoS).
