Mahatma killers want to give lesson in patriotism: Rahul Gandhi

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi launched a frontal attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the RSS, accusing them here on Monday of trying to create a communal divide to win elections.

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi launched a frontal attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the RSS, accusing them here on Monday of trying to create a communal divide to win elections.

Addressing a public meeting at Titabor, the home constituency of Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi, Mr Gandhi said those who killed Mahatma Gandhi are now trying to propagate a one nation, one culture theory in the country. “If this is allowed to happen, what will happen to your culture in Assam,” said Mr Gandhi, adding, “The killers of Mahatma Gandhi want us to take a certificate of patriotism from them.”

The Congress vice-president, who started his two-day visit to Eastern Assam aimed at wooing tea garden workers, also warned the tea workers to be careful of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s gimmicks. “The BJP government is trying to snatch your subsidised rations and intends to stop MGNREGA and the Right to Food Act, which we started for the welfare of the poor and downtrodden,” he said. Pointing out how the BJP promised to give '15 lakh to every Indian if voted to power, Mr Gandhi said, “Mr Modi doesn’t talk about employment, inflation, or the other commitments that he gave before the Lok Sabha elections.”

“Let him fulfil at least one commitment — of putting '15 lakh in the account of every Indian,” said Mr Gandhi, adding, “You will not see his photograph with the poor and worker class of people as he works for a few selected industrialists of the country only.”

Mr Gandhi said, “You should be cautious, in this elections he will come with new promises.”

Referring to the falling price of crude in the International market, Mr Gandhi said the “benefits of it have not been passed to the consumers, instead the government is making money out of it. All this money has been gifted to some industrialists of their choice.”

He said the BJP government led by Mr Modi has failed to create even a single job and instead has burdened the common man with inflation. “Mr Modi doesn’t talk about pulses costing '200 a kg. He doesn’t say how much employment his government has generated,” said Mr Gandhi while highlighting various welfare schemes of the previous UPA government.

Mr Gandhi, who will spend Monday night at Sibsagar, is also going to take part in a padyatra as well as hold consultations with tea garden community leaders at Yuvadal Auditorium in Sivasagar district on Tuesday. Earlier he also addressed a meeting of women’s self-help groups and Congress booth workers.
